The Four-Day Encounter Group — Twice a year

Four days to find out who you are with another person.

The encounter group is four days of in-person work in the tradition of Carl Rogers and the La Jolla Program. Twenty participants. No lectures. The group itself is the teacher — what you notice in yourself as you are heard, challenged, and received becomes what you bring back to your clients.

Therapists come for different reasons: to deepen their presence with clients, to recover what first drew them into this work, or simply to be met as a person rather than as a professional. You are welcome to bring a partner.

Why four days

Trust in a group builds slowly, and the capacities described on this site only show once it has. Four days gives a group time to move past politeness, to have its first real disagreements, and to find out that it can hold them.

Journey into Self, the 1968 film of one of Carl Rogers' groups, opens with the film director Stanley Kramer describing what he saw in it.

Each day

Each day includes time to step back and ask what we are learning. One question we return to: what have we discovered about us and our relationships that distance us, on one hand, and draw us closer, on the other? Bringing experience into awareness in this way helps the change last after the group ends.

$995 per person · 20 participants

Held twice a year. Many participants begin with the four-hour sampler.

Next encounter group: April 15–18, 2027. Orange County, California. Venue to be announced. Space is limited.

This is personal development, not a CE course. No CE credit is offered.
